For the past few months there have been many articles flying around the internet as to when Sony intended to cut back on the price for the PS3 and the possible launch of the PS3 Slim. Well those articles seem to be going crazy as of the past few days. Rumors and supposed leaks of information suggest that Sony intends to phase out one of their PS3 systems (some articles saying the 80GB model, others the 120GB model) and release the PS3 Slim. More people are speculating it is the 120GB model since the Uncharted bundle on Amazon went down from $500 to $450. I myself was looking at PS3 systems on Monday and saw both models down in prices. The 80Gb model was selling for $350.

With that evidence it seems clear that Sony has something up their sleeve relatively soon. An article on IGN suspected that Sony would make the announcement of the PS3 Slim at GameCon in Germany on August 18. They also said the system would be cut in price to a mere $299. As far as what features are included with it, not much has been speculated or suggested. If the announcement of the Slim does happen on the 18, it will be days after Sony stops production of the 80GB model in Japan.
If this is all true it will be a much anticipated price cut. Whether the Slim is announced or not, many still anticipate Sony to cut one of the model’s prices at the GameCon conference. This will be a smart move for Sony to attract the back to school crowd and for the upcoming holidays. This is also a smart move considering that many people would love to switch systems and give the PS3 a go, but are unable to fork out the cash. With the price cut you can expect the PS3 popularity and sales to rise in the upcoming holiday season as well.
As far as the Xbox 360 Pro, many are speculating that the system will soon be phased out and the only model available will be the Elite. Many articles suggest that you will see bundles available in stores to get rid of their stock of Pros; bundles with games such as Halo 3 and Fable II. With the phase out of the Pro, it is speculated that the Elite will become the standard Xbox 360 system and assume the price the Pro had.
As always these are all speculations and guesses with unconfirmed sources of leaked information. Both Sony and Microsoft have denied claims to any of the rumours as any gaming corportation would. So speculate away and perhaps we will see some much anticipated price cuts from both Sony and Microsoft.
